about

Ed Herrmann (percussion) and Dan Godston (cornet, small instruments) performed a set of music during the "Liar, Liar, River on Fire" closing reception at Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery and Think Space (April 30, 2016).

"Liar, Liar, River on Fire" was an exhibition of woodcut prints and sculptural works by Corey Hagelberg, at Beauty & Brawn Art Gallery and Think Space. "Liar, Liar, River on Fire" related to environmental issues on the South Shore of Lake Michigan. This region, beginning on Chicago’s South Side, is one of the most biodiverse, yet also one of the most industrialized regions of the United States.

Hagelberg’s work seeks to blurs the line between humor and tragedy, current and historical, high art and low art, natural and industrial, accusation and confession, and beautiful and grotesque. Hagelberg hopes that it will encourage the viewer to evaluate and challenge their own notions of meaning, value and beauty.

The "Liar, Liar, River on Fire" closing reception included:
• “Imagining Great Lakes Ecosystems,” a workshop facilitated by the Borderbend Arts Collective. Participants created artworks that focused on animal and plants found in the Great Lakes region, with an emphasis on how those living beings fit into their ecosystems. “Imagining Great Lakes Ecosystems” included illustration, poetry, collage and sounds.
• Set of improvisations with analog synths and field recordings from Big Marsh, Van Vlissingen Prairie – performed by Norman Long.
• Set of music by Ed Herrman and Dan Godston. This set, small instruments). This set included a performance of “From the Scars of Industry, Nature Rebounds" -- a score by Herrmann.
